Document Preparation Services

In short: Document preparation means typing and formatting documents with the information and wording you provide, such as affidavits, letters, bills of sale and Florida Supreme Court approved forms, and then notarizing them. It is a clerical service: we do not choose the document or advise on your legal rights.

Step 1

What is a document preparation service?

A document preparation service types, formats and completes documents and forms using the facts and wording the client supplies, so they are clean, complete and ready to be signed and notarized.

A lot of everyday paperwork stalls not because it is legally complex, but because it is hard to type up correctly: an affidavit for an insurance company, a letter confirming someone lives with you, a bill of sale for a boat, the Florida family law forms a court clerk handed you. We turn your information into a finished document and notarize it in the same visit.

For Florida Supreme Court approved family law forms, a non-lawyer who helps you fill them in must give you a disclosure (Form 12.900(a)) explaining that they are not a lawyer and cannot give legal advice. We provide it. If you are unsure which document or form you need, or what it should say about your rights, that is a question for an attorney.

  • Affidavits and sworn statements with your facts
  • Letters of residence, employment or authorization
  • Bills of sale for vehicles, boats and personal property
  • Florida Supreme Court approved family law forms
  • Simple agreements written with the terms you give us

Step 2

What do I need to bring for document preparation?

  • What the document must say

The facts, names, dates, amounts and wording, ideally in writing.

  • Any form you were given

A court clerk, bank or insurer may require their own form.

  • IDs for everyone who signs

For the notarization at the end.

Step 5

Frequently asked questions

Can a notary prepare legal documents in Florida?

A non-attorney can provide clerical typing services using the information and wording the client gives, and can help complete Florida Supreme Court approved forms with the required non-lawyer disclosure. What a non-attorney cannot do is give legal advice: choose the document for you, explain your legal rights or tell you what terms to use. We stay on the clerical side of that line.

Can you prepare my divorce papers?

If you and your spouse are using the Florida Supreme Court approved family law forms, we can help you fill them in with your information and give you the non-lawyer disclosure, Form 12.900(a). We cannot advise you about property division, alimony, custody or which forms fit your case; the court's self-help center or an attorney can.

Can you write my will?

We do not draft wills or decide what they should say, because that requires legal advice. If you already have a will prepared, we can arrange the signing with two witnesses and notarize the self-proving affidavit, which makes it easier for the court to accept later.

Can you prepare a bill of sale for a boat or car?

Yes. A bill of sale records the buyer, seller, price, date and the vehicle or vessel's identification. We type it with the details you both agree on and notarize the signatures. For titling, the Tax Collector may also require its own state forms.

Do you prepare documents in Spanish?

Yes. We can prepare a document in Spanish, in English, or in both. If it is going to a Florida office, it usually needs to be in English, and we can provide a certified translation of the Spanish version.
