Fees How Much a Notary Costs in Florida
Florida caps notary fees at $10 per act and $25 online. What travel, translation and apostille fees add, and what to ask before booking.
Notarizations
In short: A Florida notary public verifies who you are, watches you sign or swear, and certifies it with a seal. The two everyday acts are the acknowledgment (you confirm you signed) and the jurat (you swear the content is true). Each costs no more than $10 under Florida law.
Step 1
A notary public is an official commissioned by the State of Florida to deter fraud: the notary confirms the identity of the person signing, makes sure they sign willingly and, when the document requires it, places them under oath.
Most documents people bring to a notary need one of two certificates. An acknowledgment says that you appeared before the notary and confirmed the signature is yours; deeds, powers of attorney and many contracts use it. A jurat says that you swore or affirmed that the content is true and signed in front of the notary; affidavits and sworn statements use it.
Florida notaries can also administer oaths without a document, and certify a copy of certain documents that are not public records, such as a diploma, a lease or a personal letter. They cannot certify copies of birth, death or marriage certificates: those come from the agency that holds the record.
Step 2
Florida accepts a Florida driver license or ID card, a US passport, another state's driver license or ID, a US military ID, and some foreign passports and IDs. It must be current or issued within the past five years.
Bring every page. Blank spaces must be filled in or crossed out before the notarization.
If the agency or bank that will receive the document gave you specific notary wording, bring it. A notary cannot choose the type of certificate for you.

You sign in front of the notary, or swear or affirm to the content for a jurat.
The notary completes the certificate, signs it and applies the official seal.

Step 5
With an acknowledgment you confirm to the notary that the signature on the document is yours and that you signed willingly; it does not vouch for the content. With a jurat you swear or affirm that the content is true, and you must sign in the notary's presence. If your document does not say which one it needs, ask the person or office that will receive it, because the notary is not allowed to choose for you.
A Florida notary can notarize a signature on a document written in another language, as long as the notary can communicate directly with the signer and the notarial certificate meets Florida's requirements. Because we are bilingual, we can talk you through the process in Spanish. If the receiving office needs an English version, we also offer certified translations.
No. Florida notaries cannot certify copies of vital records such as birth, death or marriage certificates, or of public records. You need a certified copy from the issuing agency, such as the Florida Department of Health for a Florida birth certificate. If that certified copy is going abroad, it may then need an apostille, which we can help you request.
Florida law prohibits a notary from notarizing a signature of their spouse, son, daughter, mother or father. For other relatives it is legal but not recommended when the notary has an interest in the document. We will tell you if your situation calls for a different notary.
For an acknowledgment, you can confirm in front of the notary that the existing signature is yours, so it may still be possible. For a jurat, you must sign in front of the notary, so you will need a clean copy to sign again. Send us a photo before the appointment and we will tell you which case applies.
